.able offers a new publishing space for interdisciplinary research to both the academic community and the wider public.

A distributed platform designed to publish image-based academic articles resulting from practice-based research at the intersection of art, design, and sciences that deals with contemporary issues (environmental, socioeconomic, and anthropotechnical issues to name a few).

A peer-reviewed journal, .able produces academic articles in the form of visual essays that can reach a wide audience.

To submit a contribution to .able, discover our five different layout formats and follow step one of the publishing process (“pre-contribution submission”).

layout formats

For your contribution, you must choose one of .able‘s five original layout formats. Each format offers a different behavior and user experience, and each requires specific content for its production. You can download the format specifications below or access the combined specifications of all five formats by clicking here.

publishing process

off-platform

  1. 1. pre-contribution submission

To submit your pre-contribution submission, you can fill in our online submission form
(Note that you will be redirected on a dedicated submission platform).

  2. 2. pre-review

Pre-review by .able‘s editorial team. If negative: feedback from the board is provided to the main contact to clarify its choice and/or to give advice for a new submission. If positive: a more detailed proposal is requested by e-mail.

  3. 3. detailed proposal submission

The pre-contribution submission with the addition of :
1- Additional elements on the contribution such as description, explanation, visual previews and / or argumentation if necessary (no more than one page)
2- First elements of the production process (production planning, budget, means and feasibility, available material and data, ownership of data…)
3- The support required from .able to produce the contribution (design, technical assistance, and so on)

For editorial and legal reasons, .able will prioritize the publication of content produced by authors who own all intellectual property rights to the included content. The use of third-party images (from archives, news, references, etc.) is possible as long as the authors agree to identify, contact the rights holders and obtain the righs on their own, with the help of the .able team. Also, rights must be obtained under reasonable conditions (in terms of costs, time, complexity of procedures, etc.).

  4. 4. review

Dual-anonymous review by a member of the .able board and by an external expert based on the pre-contribution submission with any modifications made following the detailed submission in step 3. If a double negative: feedback from the reviewers is provided to the main contact with an explanation of their choice. If one yes and one no: another review by an external expert is undertaken. If double yes: the project enters the production-process phase with the help, if needed of an editorial mediator from the board to accompany the project.

  5. 5. production

Establishment of a non-exclusive contract for the transfer of rights to enable open-access publishing. Production supported by the .able editorial team (editorial mediator, technical support, etc.).

on-platform

  1. 6. compliance

Preparation and delivery of the content according to the specifications of the chosen .able layout.

  2. 7. integration

The contribution is integrated on the .able platform by the .able team with the help of the editorial mediator and/or in dialogue with the main contact for the contribution.

  3. 8. validation

After scientific and artistic verification, the project is published on the relevant platforms. If an issue is reported (such as a scientific mistake or content that is clearly illicit), corrections are made in dialogue with the main contact for the contribution. In the case of an impossibility to find an agreement, the board reserves itself the right not to publish the article.

  4. 9. publishing

Range of formats: mobile / web / pdf / print-on-demand / social networks.

  5. 10. communication

Each contribution will benefit from a dedicated media release and communication.
